Environmental group pushes back against HGS

The Louisiana Environmental Action Network has submitted a letter to the state Department of Environmental Quality opposing Henry Gas Storage’s proposal to discharge salt brine into Louisiana territorial waters off the coast of Marsh Island. Wilma Subra, technical advisor for LEAN, argues that the proposed discharge would exacerbate conditions in a dead zone and endanger active oyster beds, among other things.
In its permit application, HGS proposes discharging 10,000 gallons per minute of salt brine, a mining by-product, into waters that are 12 feet deep. According to LEAN’s letter, the salinity of the brine would be up to 10 times more concentrated than the water accepting it.
