Louisiana Students Successful at National Science and Humanities Symposium

BATON ROUGE – Two students represented Louisiana at the 47th annual National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, or JSHS, held from April 29-May 3 at the U.S. Air Force Adacemy in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Bonnie J. McLindon and Cooper D. Cain, who qualified for the national symposium at the Louisiana Regional Science and Humanities Symposium, were among the top presenters in their categories. The Louisiana Symposium was hosted by LSU Continuing Education in January. The National JSHS, consisted of over 240 high school students presenting their original research in science, engineering, and mathematics. McLindon, of St. Joseph’s Academy in Baton Rouge, took second place in the category of environmental sciences which included more than 25 presenters. She was awarded a $6,000 scholarship for her project, “Gulf Hypoxic Zones: Forecasting with Laboratory and Mathematical Simulations.” Bonnie’s mentor is Linda Messina of St. Joseph’s Academy. Cain, of Airline High School in Bossier City, La., presented his project, “Heparan Sulfate Glycosaminoglycans are Critical Determinants of Podocyte-Matrix Interactions and Adhesion.” Cooper was one of the top presenters in his category of medicine, health and behavioral sciences. Cooper’s mentor is Kevin McCarthy of Airline High School. “Bonnie and Cooper were excellent representatives of our state at the national symposium level,” said Douglas Weimer, executive director of LSU Continuing Education. “Recognizing the talent, innovation and dedication of students and teachers in the sciences and humanities is important for LSU and Louisiana.
